A recent $1.42 million settlement between the U.S. Department of Labor and four Long Island City contractors has gotten local construction firms on edge. Federal, state, and local officials are on the lookout for violations which can be expensive and time consuming for smaller construction firms.
Recently, the New York City District Office of the Department of Labor found four firms guilty in violating the Fair Labor Standards Act. The companies failed in paying their employees time and a half for any over time over 40 hours. The investigation found that many of the employees were paid late and the companies kept incomplete and inaccurate payroll records.
